A wall of twelve invented project covers: a ceramics identity, a coffee label, a novel, a dental clinic sign, a type specimen, a cinema poster, an olive oil label, an architecture biennale, a record sleeve, a law firm identity, a tram museum sign and a cycling brand.

AThe brief

Ostra is a two-person pottery making tableware and vases. Ana and Rui Sequeira sold through markets and a plain online shop. Customers loved the pieces and forgot the name. Parcels arrived in unmarked boxes, and one in fourteen came back broken.

They asked for a brand that could sit on a stall, a box and a shopfront, and cost little to print.

BThe approach

I spent two days in the workshop drawing what they actually throw: bottles, bowls, jars and one arched vase. Forty sketches became six marks. The arch, taken from the kiln door, was the one every shape could share.

The wordmark is lowercase and set tight so it can be stamped into clay. Colour comes from three glazes. Everything prints in two inks on kraft stock.

04 / AboutLisbon, since 2019

One designer, from first sketch to final files.

I am Teo Corva. I trained as a typographer, worked for five years at a type foundry and four years in-house at a print studio, and started this studio in 2019. I take on eight to ten projects a year, which is the number I can give my full attention.

You will talk to me, not to an account manager. I draw by hand first, work on screen second, and send you files that any printer or developer can open without calling me.

Teo asked what we make before he asked what we want. The mark came from our own kiln, and customers now say they recognise our parcels from across the room.

The signs went up on schedule and nobody has asked where the lift is since. The drawings were so clear that our fabricator had no questions.
