Counselling and psychotherapy · Hartwell and online
A calm place to talk things through.
Elmrose is a small practice with three therapists. You speak to one person, at your pace, in a quiet room in Hartwell or by video from home. We start with a free call so you can decide if we are the right fit.

What we help with
People come for many reasons.
These are the ones we hear most often. If yours is not on the list, ask on the free call. We will tell you plainly if someone else would help you better.
-
Anxiety and worry
Racing thoughts, tension in the body, trouble switching off at night.
-
Low mood
Feeling flat, tired or stuck for weeks, and not knowing why.
-
Grief and loss
A death, an ending, or a loss that is hard to put a name to.
-
Relationships
Couples, family and friendships that feel strained. Sessions for one person or two.
-
Burnout and work stress
Long hours, little rest, and a sense of running on empty.
-
Life changes
A move, a new baby, a new job, a diagnosis, or getting older.
We are not an emergency service and our therapists cannot prescribe medication.
How it works
From first call to regular sessions.
-
A free 15-minute call
You tell us what is going on and what you hope for. We explain how we work and answer your questions. There is no pressure to book.
-
A first session
Fifty minutes with the therapist who suits you best. We go at your pace and agree what you would like to work on.
-
Regular sessions
Most people meet weekly or every two weeks, at the same time, in person or online.
-
Check-ins
Every six sessions we look at how it is going together. You can change the plan, pause or finish whenever you wish.
The therapists
Three people, one steady relationship.
You keep the same therapist throughout. After the call we suggest who might suit you, and you can ask to change at any point.

Approaches
The methods we use, in plain words.
After the first session we suggest an approach and explain why. If it is not working for you, we change it.
- Person-centred counselling
- You lead. Your therapist listens closely, says back what they hear, and does not tell you what to do. It suits people who want space to think out loud.
- CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy)
- A practical method. We look at how thoughts, feelings and actions affect each other, and you try small changes between sessions.
- EMDR
- A structured way to work with distressing memories, using guided eye movements or taps. It is offered after careful preparation, and only by Idris.
- Psychodynamic work
- We look at patterns from the past that still shape how you deal with people now. It is usually slower and has no set end date.

Sliding scale
We keep a few places at a lower fee for students and people on a low income. Ask on the call. We take your word and do not ask for proof.
Receipts for insurance
After each session we email a receipt with the therapist's name, professional body and registration number, the date, the length and the fee. Some insurers repay part of the cost. Please check your policy first, as we cannot confirm cover for you.
Paying and changing a session
Pay by card or bank transfer within a day of the session. Please give 48 hours' notice to move a session, otherwise the full fee applies.
A minute to slow down
Breathe in for four, out for six.
Press start, breathe in as the circle opens and out as it closes. Stop whenever you like. If you feel light-headed, stop and breathe as you normally do.
This is a simple pacing exercise, not a treatment.
Questions
Things people ask before they book.
No. You can contact us directly. If you would like us to write to your doctor, we can do that with your agreement.
It varies. Some people come for six sessions, others for a year or more. We review together every six sessions, and you decide when to stop.
Yes. Sessions are confidential. The exceptions are a serious risk to you or to someone else, or a legal order. We explain this in full in the first session, before you say anything you would not want shared.
You get a private video link by email. You need a quiet room, a phone, tablet or computer with a camera, and a steady connection. If the connection drops, we call you by phone.
Yes. After the call we suggest one therapist and tell you why. If you would prefer someone else, say so and we will arrange it.
We are not an emergency service. If you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. For urgent support that is not an emergency, contact your doctor or a local crisis line.
