Syllabus

Eight weeks, one skill at a time.

  1. Week 1 Reading on screens

How people actually read web pages, line length, line height and choosing a body size that holds up on a phone.

  2. Week 2 Size and hierarchy

Building a type scale, deciding how many sizes you need, and making headings that guide without shouting.

  3. Week 3 Weight and contrast

Using variable fonts, picking weights that render well, and when bold helps and when it gets in the way.

  4. Week 4 Spacing

Letter spacing, word spacing and the space between paragraphs and sections. Why tight headlines and loose labels work.

  5. Week 5 Pairing typefaces

Combining a serif and a sans, finding fonts with an honest licence, and keeping a pairing to two families.

  6. Week 6 Grids and layout

Baseline rhythm, columns that work from phone to desktop, and setting tables and forms that people can use.

  7. Week 7 Type in motion

Animating text without hurting reading, respecting reduced motion, and the few effects worth the trouble.

  8. Week 8 Final project

Pull it together into a type system for a site or app of your own, presented at the last live critique.

Questions

Asked before enrolling.

Do I need to be a designer?

No. About a third of each cohort are developers and founders. You need to be able to edit a web page or a design file, nothing more.

Which software do I need?

Any design tool you already use, or a code editor and a browser. Exercises work in Figma, Penpot or plain HTML and CSS.

How much time does it take?

About three to four hours a week: the lesson, the exercise and the critique, which is recorded if you cannot join live.

What if I fall behind?

You can hand in late. Written notes in the cohort tier stay open until four weeks after the last session.

Can my company pay?

Yes. We send an invoice with your company details, and there is a price for teams of three or more.

Set it well.
